In Flight ...
I really love seagulls. Maybe it's because of their connection to
the sea or that they are the one bird I associate with the sound of
being close to the ocean. Maybe it's growing up alongside them on an
Island during my happiest days of the year. Whatever the reason is, they
have imprinted themselves on me. I love their simple coloring. And the
occasional yellow feet. One day while nestling in by the fire in the
Cape Cod cottage, I was looking through my field guide to birds in New
England. I discovered that there were 55 different kinds of seagulls in
the world and that their average life span is 30-40 years. The Herring
Gull lives 50 years! Amazing. On the Cape where my cottage sits on Sandy
Neck Bay, I love walking out to low tide and watching them play along
the sea and in the sand foraging for their next meal. I was inspired to
paint them in flight and hang this in my children's room in the cottage
by the sea. It's a reminder to always be light on ones feet and find
time to play in life.
